Art & Copy

Art Copy

The official kick-off of summer hours at Cole & Weber United has never had a better start than this year’s trip to see a matinee of the documentary “Art & Copy” directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, HYPE!, SCRATCH). The film was part of this year’s Seattle International Film Festival line up.

Just about the entire Agency was there. We were scattered throughout the cinema sipping soft drinks, munching candy and popcorn. Basking in the glow of the movie we watched as such advertising visionaries as Lee Clow (Apple Computer 1984, and today’s iPod); Dan Wieden (“Just Do It”); Phyllis K. Robinson (who invented the “me generation” with Clairol); Hal Riney (who helped President Reagan get re-elected); and George Lois (who saved MTV and launched Tommy Hilfiger overnight) divulged to the camera their professional and personal journeys of making such impactful and memorable ad campaigns. Their common secret to success seemed to be a tenacious and uncanny ability to tap into the zeitgeist of their times and express it from their unique perspective and personality.

As I watched the movie I couldn’t help but feel a growing swell of camaraderie and dare I say pride. That just maybe, this wacky profession of advertising isn’t so evil or unbearable after all. That it’s worth respecting and enjoying after all, especially when you focus on its best parts and personalities.
