A garden on the rooftop

by Terry

Last fall Richard and I were discussing our frustration with the rooftop garden. The vegetation was sparse and ugly and every year someone was digging the plants up and replanting them. We realized that we both cared enough to try something, as any attempt on our part was better than the weeds currently infesting the deck. We talked Brady into asking Alley 24 management if we could use it as a pea patch.

Richard and I have a vision of sharing our produce with the food bank next door. We were disappointed with the offer of just one small box and completely flabbergasted when they awarded us one quarter of the box. Somehow, Britt convinced Alley 24 we deserved a full half of the box, almost five by two feet, so we staked out our land and planted the seeds. Everyone here was so excited about the garden - we had all skill sets planting seeds. It may look more like a Chia pet than a pea patch right now, but we have faith it will be fantastic.

My mom cherishes her organic vegetable garden and was happy to share several gallons of her live compost full of worms, beetles and spiders. The larger lettuce plants came from her green house – they are about four weeks older than the seeds popping up. The lettuce is ready to eat, who wants a salad?
